MEDIA TEXT INFLUENCES

Looking at my Rock genre, I chose a song which I want my music video to be highly influenced by. I like how they have used many cuts to show fast pace and can also create confusion in the video. I also like how in cinematography they have used extreme close up shots to show importance of the singer and his facial gestures. They have also broken the 4th wall as Josh (the singer) makes direct contact with the audience. This is becoming a more conventional code in music videos to allow the audience to feel more involved with the music.

Looking at another Media text I looked at the band 'BATAAR'. I thought the CD cover was put together well as you can't tell what's going on in the background, yet appeals to the audience.

Although this song doesn't come under my genre, the skateboarding scene is what I want to base the verses of my song around.

STORYBOARD

I decided to create a storyboard for the song Bite My Tongue by the band You Me At Six as it has a lot of cuts and focus pulls which I want to use in my own video, this will enable me to see how long it will take and the process which I'll need to take.
It took me a while to put this together as each shot was very short, some not even a second long. However, I think this has showed me how challenging it will be creating a music video as each shot needs equal planning and timing!

CONVENTIONS.

Cinematography

(Took from You Me At Six - Bite My Tongue)
Extreme close ups are also used to show the expression and feelings of the artist, here we can see Josh is looking angry which creates the idea of violence in the video. Josh is using direct eye contact which is breaking the 4th wall as he's addressing the audience. Mise en scene also comes into this as the background is dark and gives more of an aggressive feel as it's more 'in your face'.

(Took from Deaf Havana - Leeches)
A dutch tilt can also be used in rock videos as stereo-typically rock songs are loud and aggressive and you would picture everything as being a little distorted - a dutch tilt can create an illusion of the scene being confusing and messy.

(Took from Kasabian - Fire) music video.
Tracking shots are used frequently to follow the singer/actor. These can be used to give many different effects such as being followed/spyed on or just basically following the artist to where they are going to create a story.
(Deaf Havana - Leeches)
Focus pull is used a lot to highlight specific objects or people- to create the illusion of something being less/more important. For example if there was two people stood next to each other and one was blurred, you would get the impression that the blurred out person isn't as important, and the focus pull shows the other person is imperior. However, it could also show the person isn't thinking about anyone around them and are in a day dream.

High angle shots can be used to show someone being looked down on, or making them look small and vunerable in a scene.
Editing
Rock videos tend to use jump cuts alot to show continuity or a fast pace. In this case we can see the shot went from the girl looking into the room, to the girl being inside the room. (Took from Deaf Havana - Leeches music video)
(Kasabian - Re-Wired)
Slow motion is used to create the effect of time going slowly or to emphasise something dramatic happening.

(Avenged Sevenfold - Seize The Day)
Here we can see a shot of a guy stood, fading into a shot of a guitar. Fades can be used to show the subject thinking about something, or to add a calming effect instead of a quick jump cut to another shot.

Mise en scene.
(Deaf Havana - Leeches)
Stereotypically rock songs use alot of dark clothing and surroundings. They also tend to include music instruments (as used in this video). We can also see that the artist himself is wearing dark clothes, this drains the mood and creates a sad/emotional atmosphere.

MUSIC GENRE.

I have chosen the genre rock for my music video, this is so I can use various editing conventions including jump cuts. As rock songs can be fast I could use this to my advantage as the beat of the music would work well when the camera cuts if the person is walking/running to show continuity.

The genre rock can also enable me to fall under stereotypes of what the 'rock' audience would wear, such as dark clothing, band shirts etc.

However, I want to create a contrasting music video, with a rock side but in the chorus I want to create a more action type video and contrasting colours as the chorus is more upbeat.

CHOSEN SONG & BAND PROFILE...

I have chosen to look at the song Fire by Kasabian.

I have chose this because the verses are slow whilst the chorus is powerful. This allows me to work with different camera shots, editing techniques and mise en scene in the music video instead of sticking to one repetitive theme, allowing my video to have different aspects to it.
I have already thought of the idea that I want the verse to feature a band singing (performance based) , whilst I want the chorus to be up beat and have alot of action in it (skateboarding/biking etc)...I think this would be un conventional as you wouldn't expect this in a rock video.

Kasabian are an English rock band from Leicester that formed in 1997.  They are signed to Columbia Records which is owned by one of 'The big four' -Sony Music Entertainment.
There music is influenced from bands such as; The Rolling Stones (whom they have also supported in 2006), The Doors and Joy Division.
Kasabian has used synergy when there song 'Lost Souls Forever' was featured in FIFA 2004 on the Playstation 2 - allowing them to gain a larger audience.
Kasabian have played at many large festivals including Leeds Festival 2012 and V Festival 2010.
In my opinion Kasabian could class there audience as 'niche' as Rock music is not mainstream as there music would appear on radios such as Kerrang! not popular radios such as Heat and Viva.
